I've been reading The Left Hand of Darkness, and - I don't know how else to describe it - so far, there are some core aspects (but not others) of the peoples of both nations of Gethen that feel deeply relatable to me as a Chinese person. Not Chinese in the form of superficial impressions of outsiders, but in the sense that I see in the cultures of Karhide and Orgoreyn the ways my own people actually live. It's weird, and I've never had an experience like this before, and I've read and seen many fictional works portray imagined cultures. I don't believe this was intentional, one of the many reasons being that these are aspects you can only understand by living a life there. I think Le Guin is just good at setting up a world and believing it, and so making it easier for the reader to believe it too.

Also she must have been influenced by Taoism somehow right?? I might finally look it up after I finish this book. I started wondering back when I was reading The Lathe of Heaven.

Erin in the Morning's newsletter email today starts with 'UK's Labour Party Abandoned Trans People'. I closed the email without reading, and then thought to myself, 'You must be informed of the things that make you afraid.' I reopened the article and read through it quickly, and it was nothing I hadn't already known. It didn't make me feel better. My thoughts had nowhere to go to borrow comfort. At least testosterone hasn't made it hard for me to cry.

I published a free knitting pattern for a vest recently which I designed for myself a few months ago, and I just now ordered yarn to make another sample of this pattern... I know I won't be able to cast it on for at least another few months (functionally monogamous knitter here) but I'm excited... I swear last time I finished a marling project I said 'never again' and yet here I am. Planning to do it again. I usually hate stripes but something about marling (and traditional fair isle, for that matter) just appeals to me so much, it's like painting with yarn.

ok since dreamwidth isn't banned in china (yet) what if... i keep my journal bilingual? (too impractical perhaps but i DO want to write in chinese at least more often than tumblr)
